FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Are there resources available to the parents to monitor the child's progress, or just report cards?
PowerSchool, a web-based student information system is used for grades 6- 12.  This system allows parents real-time access to their student's grades. It is beneficial to parents, teachers, administrators, and to the students who can track their own progress. As soon as any information is added or changed it's available to students and parents. When teachers enter grades and attendance information for their class, that same data is immediately available.

What kind of advanced placement programs are available at BVCHS?
Advanced Placement and Honor courses are open to students of high motivation and/or proven ability who wish to study a subject in greater depth.  BVCHS offers AP classes in US History, English, Calculus and Statistics. Honors classes are available for English and Chemistry.

What percentage of high school seniors attend college?
Approximately 98% of our students go on to further education. Of the 2007 graduating class, 100% were headed to a 2 year junior college or a 4 year college or university.

What is tuition cost? And is there a price break for multiple students in one family?
Tuition rates vary depending on the age of your student. These rates are adjusted each year. Payments may be made monthly, and payments pre-paid for the entire year prior to the end of June for the school year beginning the next fall are discounted. A discount is available to parents for multiple students attending Big Valley Christian School.

What are school hours?
Our school day for kindergarten is 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Hours for 1st – 8th grade is from 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The school day for high school students is 8:00 a.m. to 2:55 p.m.

Are Big Valley Christian Schools accredited?
BVCS is accredited by The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI).  WASC is a regional association that accredits public and private schools, colleges, and universities in the United States.

What are the sizes of classes?
There are typically 22 to 30 students per class. Larger classes in the elementary grades have a teacher and a full time aide.

What Athletic teams are available? Are they included in the tuition, or are they extra?
A variety of high school and junior high school sports are available.  High School: Baseball, Basketball, Cheer, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Track, and Volleyball. Junior High School: Basketball, Softball, Track and Volleyball.
Athletics fees at the High School for 2009-10 are $120 for the first sport (except football $220) and $100 for each additional sport. Athletic fees for the junior high school are $90 for the first sport and $70 for each additional sport.   Check out BVCHS Athletics for additional information.

What choir, worship, or band classes are available?
Instruction in music and the opportunity to join various choirs and bands are offered at all age levels. Elementary School students participate in two musical performances each year. In addition, 3rd grade students take Recorders, and 4th-5th grade students may participate in choir, band or strings. Junior High School students may participate in band, praise band, strings, or choir. High School students may participate in band, praise band, or choir.

Are drama classes offered?
Drama is available at both the Junior High and High School campuses. This program is very popular amongst Big Valley students and two major productions are performed each year.

Is chapel scheduled regularly or just Bible classes?
All students in kindergarten through 8th grade receive daily Bible instruction at BVCS. In addition, all students attend weekly chapels. We have a variety of chapel speakers, ranging from local youth pastors and children's pastors to professional drama teams. High school students are required to take 4 terms of Bible classes. Additionally, high school students meet in bi-monthly small groups, and have the opportunity to join other Bible studies and prayer groups.

Can parents attend chapel?
Parents are welcome to attend chapels which are held on Wednesday mornings.

Are parent volunteers allowed on campus?
BVCS is an extension of Christian family life, and we take seriously our obligation to be partners with parents in providing the best possible education for our students. From kindergarten to high school graduation, BVCS is dedicated to providing tools and opportunities for every student to reach his or her highest potential: academically, socially, physically, and spiritually. As partners, BVCS encourages all parents to become involved in their child's education through participation in the classroom and other opportunities made available throughout the year.

What are the requirements of the family's church attendance, along with the children's requirements?
All students and families are encouraged to be a part of a Bible teaching church family. As a requirement of admission, students in 9th-12th grade are to be actively involved with a church or youth group and maintain a personal walk with the Lord Jesus. Additionally, 9th-12th grade students are required to submit a letter of recommendation from a pastor as a condition of admission.

Do the teachers have web sites available for students to access homework, test schedules, and other information?
Each teacher has a webpage.  To find a specific teacher's page, access the Parent/Students Login and register your child's class.

How does Big Valley Christian School communicate with families?
In the elementary grades, communications from teachers are sent home each week in the students folders, and also posted on the teacher's individual webpage. The Big Valley Voice newsletter is emailed home 3-4 times per year. The Upcoming Events section of the website is updated regularly to highlight various events. The school calendar is updated regularly on the BVCS website. Important reminders are also sent to the parents' email accounts. Lastly, parents with students in 6th – 12th grade can access academic information via PowerSchool.

Are uniforms required?
Uniforms are not required for BVCS students; however, we do have a dress code policy that is enforced.  Please refer to the Parent-Student Handbook for specific dress code policy.
