The ability to communicate through the performing arts is an important part of developing the whole student. In the preschool and elementary grades, students practice and perform an annual Christmas program as well as smaller classroom productions. Preschool and kindergarten students perform at their promotion ceremonies at the end of the year. Elementary students participate in the ACSI Speech Meet each year, requiring all students to polish their skills in the areas of memorization, clearly speaking in public, and engaging an audience through meaningful expression. In addition, elementary students may choose to participate in the theatre arts program. Recent productions have included “Cinderella Kids”, “101 Dalmatians Kids”, “Lion King Kids”, “Annie Kids”, and “AristoCats Kids.”
Junior high students participate in the ACSI Speech Meet and have the opportunity to be a part of annual theatre arts productions. Students may participate in an onstage role, or be involved in the stage crew, backstage management, or technical crew. Recent junior high theatre arts productions have included “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, “Alice in Wonderland”, “Little Mermaid Jr”, “Peter Pan Jr.”, and “Honk Jr.”
The Big Valley High School theatre arts department has a longstanding reputation of excellence in their productions. The theatre arts department allows students to express themselves through two productions each year, whether participating on stage, serving backstage or with the technical crew. Working on a major production allows students to exercise leadership skills and to have multiple opportunities for discipleship and personal growth. Recent productions from the high school drama department include “Into the Woods Jr.”, “Anne Frank”, “Mousetrap”, “Elf Jr.”, “James and the Giant Peach”, “Singin’ in the Rain Jr.”, and “Cinderella.”
